mamma LOVES beechworth

Mamma never thought you could fall in love with a place - but Beechworth is it! Victoria’s High Country invited Mamma and here crew to visit the region this summer and this town - and its surrounding villages - have blown us away.

There is HEAPS to do in the area that we really only scratched the surface with our weekend away. From the incredible history that has been preserved since the gold rush, to the absolutely delicious food and produce on offer, - we enjoyed every meal and experience.

The history buffs (yeah, that’s Mamma) will be mesmerised by the architecture and stories that this place holds. It is best experienced in person at the Telegraph Station, at the local Burke Museum, through the walls of the Old Beechworth Gaol and tied up nicely in a bow on a town guided walking tour. There is even the facade of the old hospital up on the hill that is both beautiful and haunting all at once.

The outdoor explorers will love visiting the Woolshed Falls just outside of town and having a splash or paddle at Lake Sambell. The local lake is ideal for families with its calm waters, sandy beach and playground all in one place. There is also plenty to explore on the back of the bike, especially on the rail trails. Mamma heard great things about a ride along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail to Everton for milkshakes.

When it comes to food, you are spoilt for choice. Every little village in the area has its famous pub - like the Stanley Pub in Stanley and The Star Hotel in Yackandandah. Beechworth has the incredible Bridge Road Brewery (complete with a kids playground) as well as the iconic Beechworth Bakery. We found the cutest of coffee shops at the old Golden Era Service Station - Little Nev - that serves great coffee from the back of a horse float! Plus stunning paninis and pastries from Project 49. We had the BEST picnic lunch at the lake.

BUT the highlight was the pies from Gum Tree Pies. We are out of words to describe these little pockets of perfection - the Thai Chicken was drool worthy. They have four shops in the area (just remember to pack an esky so you can grab a take home pack for the drive home!)

They don’t let you go hungry here in the country and the same can be said about keeping you well hydrated. The famous Billson’s Brewery is located on the outskirts of town and you can sample all the cordial flavours on offer at the tasting bar OR back closer to the heart of town, at the Soda Bar. This is your old school milkshake shack and is the most charming thing we have ever seen!

If you haven’t had enough of the treats - or the sugar - there is ALWAYS the sweet shop AND ice cream shop in the main street. OR head to Beechworth Honey and sample some of natures sweet stuff!

Mamma suggests you make a road trip here and you will need at least a weekend to be able to take it all in. We stayed in luxury accommodation in the small village of Stanley, at Planetrees, just outside of Beechworth and the experience was total bliss. There are heaps of other places to stay too - see the Victoria’s High Country website for even more options.
