Did you know that Beechworth was a town that found its fame after gold was found here in 1852? That Ned Kelly and many of the Kelly family faced court in these original buildings? And that during the height of the gold rush there were up to 8 thousand people in the town (that is more than double the current population in the area!) but it was all alluvial gold - no nuggets here!
Well this Mamma definitely learnt HEAPS on the Echoes of History Guided Walking Tour of Beechworth. This 45 minute walk around town is a great way to see the historical sights and learn some things about the European history of the area spanning back 170 years.
The tour starts at the information centre (always the best place to start for any visit to a new town!) and takes you from the telegraph station, around to the Burke Museum and ends up at the old London Tavern - where the visiting circuit judges used to stay when in town. There are lots of gems that you and the kids will learn along the way
