lake sambell, beechworth

Every summer holiday destination needs a lake that can help bring the temperature down and Beechworth has Lake Sambell. This used to be the site of a gold mine (along with most places in the area!) and now is a family friendly lake that you’ll all enjoy.

The water is clear and clean enough to swim through, especially at the shallow beach section that you will find near the main car park at the lake. It has a rough sandy base and plenty of shady places to supervise from at the edge of the water. There’s a pontoon a little while out so you can swim out towards more open water, but that also means there are plenty of reeds and weed around that are on the slimy side!

Close to the beach you will find public toilets with enough space inside to be changing rooms, undercover picnic tables, a playground that’s under shade cloth and some BBQs too. You can bring the bikes as well, as there is a track that circumnavigates the lake OR you can go the water option and go kayaking. The lake is super calm and a great place for beginners.

Adventure Guides Australia offer flat water kayak tours of the lake and bring everything you need as well as teach you basic paddling techniques. We spent over an hour on the water in both double and single kayaks and it was a real highlight of the day! Our guide David went through some of the history of the lake as well as teaching us all about being safe out there on the water. You can book a tour here.
