burke museum, beechworth

Named after the once local police superintendent Robert O'Hara Burke - you know him from the ill fated pair more famously known as Burke and Wills - the Burke Museum is a treasure trove of Beechworth history, assembled all in one place.

As you enter the space you will come upon the jewels, a huge display of countless minerals and discoveries from the grounds around Beechworth and Victoria’s High Country. There is also a giant display case of some stunning pieces of natural history. There are dozens of birds with all beautiful colours (except maybe he pelican - that’s a bit creepy) as well as the last thylacine (the Tasmanian tiger).

The last amazing piece in the collection - which Mamma found both incredible and disturbing in equal measure - is Ned Kelly’s death mask. The details of his eyebrows, eyelashes and even his slight smile are all a little chilling.

Second section is like stepping back in time. This street scape has recreated what the town may have looked like in its heyday - when the town had, for a short time, one of Australia’s richest goldfields. The shop fronts are set up as it would have been, showcasing the fashion, the products available at the time and some cool artefacts from the past.

Finally the last section honours the important people of the region from both the past and today, telling their stories on the walls. It’s always fascinating to learn parts of the local history as well as having a few indoor activities up your sleeve when on a road trip in case the weather decides not to play along!
