stanley pub and general store, stanley

If you want to learn about any small Australian town - head to the local watering hole. In Stanley, the entire heart of this tiny village is the Stanley Pub. This establishment which was first opened in 1854, has had a resurgence in recent years under the guidance of new ownership and it has made its mark with the locals as well as the visitors to Victoria’s High Country.

The pub has everything you need. An outdoor lawn for the kids to kick a ball while awaiting their nuggs to arrive, a fully stocked bar with a great selection of wines, cocktails and ice cold beer, PLUS a menu that you would have never have expected to find in a town that is home to 324 people (although there have been some babies born since that number was calculated!). It is best to describe the offering as a gastro pub style with Asian influences - and to be honest - it ALL sounded so amazing that we couldn’t choose, so we went Mamma style - and ordered nearly everything from the entree menu and shared the lot!

By night The Stanley Pub is the place to be (so you better make a booking!) but during the day, the side room acts as The General Store. Here, the team champion the local producers and have everything from gins, wines, sauces and jams, to fresh bread, flowers and ready made meals from Food Direct - that are just perfect for having later.
