visit dinner plain in victoria's high country
/Winter in Victoria’s High Country is the place to be. And if you have the family on board… Dinner Plain is one of the BEST options!
This alpine wonderland - and the highest freehold village in the country - is super compact, easily accessible and has everything the family might need to adventure in the snow! All the fun stuff is in walking distance and all at your well-gloved fingertips.
The town central hub is the meeting point for plenty of adventures such as snow shoeing, husky sled rides and where to catch the bus if you are on venturing off to Hotham. There is a cute playground, picnic spaces and heated huts. With some wide open spaces, this was a great place for snow play and snow fort building. Lots of snowball fights, a game of snow baseball (well our stick wasn’t wide enough for cricket) and snowman building takes place around here.
For more lively activities, Scubbers End is the spot to be. This is where you find the village ski run and Peashooter Toboggan run. Dinner Plain is a winning spot for beginner skiers as well as family friendly tobogganing. There are lots of cross country trails around too, but we spotting many more toboggans and families enjoying the trails than anything else.
Mamma and family were invited to the mountain to explore a range of activities and to help YOU plan your next winter adventure. Apart from simply playing in the snow (that is literally all Mamma’s 10 and 7 year old wanted to do all day long), we trekked over the road into the Alpine National Park with Glenn from Traverse Hotham. Here we donned our snow shoes and explored the magnificent snow covered landscape. Without these paddle like shoes, we wouldn’t have been to venture off the beaten track and see some incredible views. We loved spotting the footprints in the snow - the kangaroo prints were pretty special!
Next up on truly unique experiences was a dog sled tour from Howling Huskys. These beautiful creatures, many who have been rescued and re-homed by the tour company, guide visitors through the snow via sled. They work together as a team along the trail amongst the gums and then your guides will introduce you to the pack for plenty of pats and cuddles.
There is a range of accommodation on the mountain and we stayed at Club Wyndham right in the middle of the village. Here you’ll find a wonderful restaurant Elements, serving incredible breakfast, lunch and dinner - Mamma recommends the Lamb Shank! We also ate at Stonesthrow at the High Plains Hotel - the pizzas are incredible - and the Dinner Plain Hotel - best Eggplant parma going around.
This has been Mamma’s first big snow adventure with the family and it probably won’t be the last. The village is located about a 90 minute drive from Bright via Hotham Heights or 30 minutes from Omeo. With no resort entry fee, plenty of snow play on offer and some unique experiences to be had, Dinner Plain is a great winter escape!
