howling huskys @ dinner plain
/There are a few experiences that are bucket list worthy. Being pulled along by husky dogs in the snow just so happened to be on Mammas! Howling Huskys offer snow sled rides through Victoria’s High country, including the village of Dinner Plain.
Meeting at the hut in the centre of town, you and your riding buddies board a snow sled while the team handle the dogs onto the lead ropes. Then, when all are securely attached in their positions, you are taken out into snow and amongst the beautiful snow gums at pace!
The guides on the rear of the sled are the masters of the pack, constantly calling and chatting to the dogs using simple commands to get the dogs to head left or right or simply to take off. Do they always go the way the driver wishes? Nah-ah! On our morning the track needed to be changed due some patchy areas of snow. Yet, with some careful redirection, a few stops and firm words of encouragement, the dogs made their way along.
The crew here absolutely love their dogs and you get a chance to meet the dogs after your ride for pats and cuddles with the friendly ones of the group. Most of these dogs are rescue animals from the Howling Huskys team and they have the best time doing what they love - running!
