snow shoeing with traverse hotham @ dinner plain

One of the tricky things about going sight seeing in the snow... is… the SNOW! All the best views and interesting things to see are off the beaten trail and in places you just can’t get to … unless you have SNOW SHOES! These clip on pieces of equipment are just like the old tennis shoe versions we have seen on the cartoons growing up. Except of course, these are the modern version and gives you great coverage when walking on all types of snow. They are super easy to use and with an expert guide to lead you - Glenn from Traverse Hotham - snow shoeing is something the entire family can succeed in!

We started our tour of the Alpine National Park from Dinner Plain village. After popping over the road and attaching our shoes to our shoes, we headed off into the pristine snow fields. Being out in the bush with the only sounds being our gear crunching (and occasionally sinking) in the snow, was absolutely sunning. Once you are away from the road you don’t really hear a sound, giving you a beautiful sense of peace out in nature.

Glenn is a wonderful guide, showing great patience with the kids, answering all their curious questions and stopping to point out local bush tucker, interesting patterns on the trees and identifying possible dangers on the trail. Our favourite game was looking for footprints in the snow. We spotted the tracks of a hare, rabbit, wombat and an adventurous kangaroo!

Our walk lasted just shy of two hours and covered just over 2km. We moved at a steady pace and stopped off a delicious tea and cake break too. It certainly felt a lot further than the map said, but moving through the snow is a slow and steady trek takes time. The views were beautiful and such a great way to discover the trails less travelled.
