herring island, richmond

Did you know the Yarra has its very own island accessible only by boat? Herring Island is Melbourne’s little secret hiding in plain sight - and it’s completely free!

The island itself is artificial and sprawls a quaint 3.2 hectares. There, you will find picnic grounds (including BBQs), local flora and fauna as well as a gallery (formerly an old scout hall).

Herring Island though, is most famous as a sculpture park. Interwoven into the landscape, the island is home to nine environmental sculptures (created using only natural materials) that blend seamlessly into their surrounds. Follow the trail that weaves throughout the island to spot them all - Mamma’s 6 year old treated it like a scavenger hunt and had a ball!

You are welcome to take your own transport (Mamma’s talking canoe, kayak, paddleboard etc) or wait until the weekend when Parks Victoria run their free punt service which operates between Como Landing and the island itself. Though the island is accessible all year around, the punt service only runs from early January through to Easter.

There are no food services on the island so be sure to bring snacks, water or a picnic! There is also a cafe right next to Como Landing where the punt docks incase you want to take a coffee with you. Just be sure to take all of your rubbish off the island with you as there are no bins!

Mamma’s hot tip - there is signage around warning visitors about the possibility of snakes, so stick to the trail and wear close toed shoes.
