If you know a fire truck obsessed kid then this is one to pop on the to do list. Every Friday morning the firefighters of Eastern Hill Fire Station in East Melbourne put on a FREE display open to the general public - no bookings required, just show up!
Running for approximately an hour, kids get to learn about fire safety, watch specialised rescue equipment demonstrations and witness a simulated fire rescue (special guest appearance from the most committed firefighting clown Mamma has ever seen).
As if that’s not enough, kids also get to climb aboard a fully operational fire truck and have a go on the fire hose themselves. What you’ll notice here is how engaged and friendly all the firefighters are - everyone seems genuinely happy to be there and the kids can feel it. Though it can get busy, they ensure that every single person gets a go on the fire truck and hose if they want to - at no point do you feel rushed to leave.
Not only did the 3 year old absolutely LOVE the entire experience but Mamma will never forget the joy radiating from his face as he got to sit in the front seat of a real life Nee-Naw. This is one of those experiences you know the kids will remember for a long time after.
And when the fire station display is over, why not walk the 140 meters to the Fire Services Museum of Victoria which boasts one of the largest collections of firefighting memorabilia in Australia.
