camberwell library, camberwell
/There are some suburban libraries that have an undefinable sense of magic about them - spaces that spark joy and wonder, but you can’t quite pinpoint why. Camberwell Library is one of those places.
The spectacular wall mural that adorns the back wall of the kid’s section certainly has something to do with it. Made up of 7 scenic panels that transport visitors to different countries, worlds and planets, Mamma;s 6 year old spent an age looking at all the fine details..
Or maybe it’s the hidden courtyard which serves as a tranquil spot to read under the impressive tree that stands proud in its centre. The courtyard also comes complete with a giant chess set and connect 4 for the kids to play with while grownups enjoy the relaxing surrounds or fit in a little snack time in between playing and reading.
Back inside the library, the kids area is plentiful with all the things little ones love - blocks, train set, dinosaurs, colouring in and of course, books. Lots and lots and LOTS of books. You’ll always find some sort of engaging activity to take part in here as well - last time Mamma visited, Boroondara Bird Watching Bingo was up and running where kids could grab a pair of prop binoculars, a bingo card and go hunting around the library for all the birds pictures hiding in plain sight.
The library also houses cafe facilities although the space does not currently have a tenant. But not to worry! There are a couple of cafes across the road perfect for a takeaway on the way to the library.
