Fire Services Museum of Victoria, East Melbourne

Did you know we have our very own fire services museum here in Melbourne?! You’ll find it in the original Eastern Hill Fire Station building in East Melbourne - once the cities tallest building where fire fighters would sit in the watch tower looking out across the city for signs of smoke.

Originally opening in 1979, the museum is run completely by volunteers, each with their own history and experience within the fire services.

Inside you’ll find one of Australia’s largest collections of fire fighting memorabilia from across the globe with over 10,000 items!

There is so much to see: old-fashioned breathing masks, smoke jackets, an original fire pole (complete with firemen mannequins), uniforms, medals, portraits, fire-fighting apparatuses, audio/visual anecdotes and of course - most importantly - vintage fire engines.

The museum has collected and restored several historic fire fighting vehicles over the years. Amongst others, there is a hand drawn (yes, that means the fire fighters carried it!) 40-feet escape ladder cart, a ‘fire horse’ - drawn manual pumper (complete with replica horses) and a “Dennis” Pumper truck.

You’ll also find a kids corner complete with colouring in pages and pencils as well as a gift shop filled with fire related toys and souvenirs to remember your visit!
