corrigan's suspension bridge @ tarra bulga national park, balook

This location makes FernGully seem not like a cartoon movie, but for real life! Tarra Bulga National Park hosts one of the most beautiful cool temperate rainforests in Victoria. Nestled in a gully of ferns and surrounded by ancient mountain ash trees, the suspension bridge truly is a sight to behold.

Take the Ash Track at Balook Visitor Centre carpark to experience the splendour of the bridge. Along the way you can marvel at the sheer size of some of Australia’s OLDEST trees. The mountain ash trees in this gully would have grown to maturity witnessed only by the First Nation peoples of Australia, with some standing today more than 70m tall!

On the way back, the Fern Gully Track will truly make you feel like a fairy darting about the banks of the stream while the tree giants tower overhead. In winter, this is a misty wonderland! Return to the original carpark by the Scenic Track.

Keep a lookout as you go for signs of lyrebirds, wombats, yabbies and wallabies, as well as lots of other native wildlife!

While you’re here, and maybe after your lunch break, a look at the Balook Visitor Centre is worth it, there is lots of information about the park and its animal residents and colouring in for the kids. Check the hours here.

Mamma’s special mention: And if you need somewhere nearby to stay, Tarra Valley Caravan Park Fernholme is a beautiful spot by the Tarra river with powered or unpowered sites and cabins.
