birdsland reserve, belgrave heights

Every time we think we have explored far and wide in this eastie end of Melbourne, we follow another trail and find more treasure. This time - Birdsland. Tucked in the hills of Belgrave Heights, this nature reserve and trail that weaves around the Monbulk Creek and retarding basin, is yet ANOTHER slice of eastie paradise.

The area is ideal for a family walk with the main loop around this man made lake - the platypus lake walk - is roughly 1km. We take the wheels as it is nice and flat, and certainly achievable for our 3 and 6 year olds (attitude permitting).

You are likely to spot plenty of wildlife around the area - although the area is named after some previous local residents - the Bird family (and not necessarily the feathered kind like was assumed). The ducks are pretty friendly and we often hear kookaburras in the trees.

Mamma's special mention: There is a car park at the beginning of the trail (there are a couple of more advanced trails in the area too) with a shelter, bbq area, picnic tables and most importantly, toilets. Leashed dogs are welcome as well.

the nitty gritty
