/Thomas the Tank Engine says, “Little engines can do big things.” Well, this Mamma thinks that little parks can do big things, especially ones right next to a train line!
If your little ones love trains and a park play, then look no further than Laburnum Lot Playground. Tucked right next to Laburnum Railway Station and the famed Box Hill to Ringwood Rail Trail, this park is positioned perfectly for loads of fun. Surrounded by Laburnum’s quintessential gumtrees and beautifully landscaped to match its lush, green surroundings, this park is a wonderful place to play, climb and explore.
The park was completely refurbished in 2021 and is divided into two main zones. The playground’s main structure includes a multi-level climbing frame, a rope tunnel, lots of ladders, a rockclimbing wall and a generous, fast slide. This is the perfect part of the park for Mamma’s slightly older and more experienced movers. A second, smaller play structure keeps the little ones in mind. It replicates the features of the main structure, but caters more to Mamma’s smaller explorers. The interactive maze puzzle underneath the structure was a highlight for Mamma’s littlest adventurer. Beside these two structures are a carousel, a snake springer and several swings (including an inclusive pod swing). There are picnic tables, benches and spaces to secure bikes. The park is accessed easily either via the sealed path from Salisbury Avenue or from Hillside Crescent in Blackburn. There is plenty of green space for little ones to roam and generous shade from the trees which line the park.
The highlight of this park though? The trains! This park is the perfect place for trainspotting. Mamma’s little ones were delighted by each “toot” of the incoming trains, giving them time to race over to the fence along the rail corridor to wave to each passing train driver. Given its proximity to Laburnum Station, why not round out this adventure with a train ride? Your engine enthusiasts will be thrilled!

Mamma’s Special Mention: Little ones worked up an appetite with all of that trainspotting? Walk down the hill and around the corner to Laburnum Village. Mamma visited The Joy Parade with her little ones who absolutely demolished their Little Joys Waffles.
