train of lights, emerald lakeside to gembrook
/This winter the Puffing Billy Railway is set to illuminate the Dandenong Ranges up with brilliance AGAIN! The Train Of Lights will be a special NIGHT service from Lakeside to Gembrook which features a spellbinding travelling light show like no other.
From Friday 4 July to Sunday 20 July (that’s all throughout the winter school holidays), rug up the kiddos and climb aboard this magical journey. There will be amazing projections, bright lights all along the carriages, patterns sent glowing into the forests - a real sight to behold! Departing at 6 pm daily from Lakeside Station, the Train of Lights will embark on a two-and-a-half-hour return journey that chugs along the historic narrow-gauge track to Gembrook.
After a scenic ride, the train arrives at the Gembrook Station for a 55-minute stopover. Here, you can warm up by the crackling open fire pits and sip on a comforting hot chocolate, buy a snag from the local Rotary Club of Emerald and District, listen to the sounds of a live musician, capture a photo with the beautifully lit-up train or the friendly Puffing Billy Railway volunteers who make the experience all the more special.
We absolutely loved the experiences of sitting on the carriages with the family, watching the night sky transform and heading into the hills for a winter adventure.
Tickets have sold out almost as quickly as they have gone on sale in years gone by, so don’t hesitate if you plan on grabbing your tickets.
If you do miss out, don’t fret. There are a number of crossings that you can head to along the trail between Emerald and Gembrook to catch a glimpse of Billy all decked out in lights. Remember: keep the kids safe and everyone well clear of the crossings. A hot chocolate in the boot of the car and a wave to the carriages does still sound like fun!
