summer at mt buller

Victoria’s High Country is a beautiful place to visit all year round but in summer - it is absolutely stunning! Mt Buller in “Green Season” is picture perfect. Stunning 360º views of the mountain tops, impeccable sunsets and soooooo many stars, you’ll never ever be able to count them all.

Visiting at this time of year provides you with the perfect break from the hustle and heat of the city, with plenty of time to unwind, get your huff-and-puff on whilst hiking and taking in the scenery, as well as getting the kids onto their bikes.

Mamma and her crew spent the weekend in the mountain tops for the perfect overnight getaway. Staying at The Mt Buller Chalet, we were centrally located within The Village, making it easy to walk to the nearby activities, the grocer and the pub. Staff are beautifully attentive and the kids had a ball in the hotel pool!

While the sun is shining it is the perfect opportunity to get outside and explore. The pump track in the main village area was a huge hit and made Mamma dizzy with the number of laps attempted! There is a gnome hunt that the kids will enjoy, as well as a bunch of sculptures all over the village to find. Our favourite was the iconic characters, Rabbitwoman and Dogman by Gillie and Marc.

If you have bigger kids than Mamma’s and they are keen to test their daredevil skills, be sure to check out the mountain bike trials as these are world class. There are constant shuttle buses running around the village to help riders and you can even hire bikes on the mountain to save space in the car.

The place to be at dinner time at Mt Buller is the Kooroora Hotel (or as the locals call it “Hoo-Ha!”). Its open all year round and has great pub grub. The pump track is right next door, so after a game of pool and some yummy fish n chips, the kids can ride while you watch from the outdoor tables.

Then of course, while at Mt Buller, you MUST take in those views. When the sun is starting to set it is the best time to jump in the car and head up towards The Summit. Although the peak is the best place to see all the spectacular scenes, the additional walk from the car park was not on our wish list (it is steep in some parts and Mamma was not keen on offering any piggy back rides!), so we found a spot all to ourselves at the top of another ski lift to watch the sun make its way down to the horizon. The light is indescribable.

To finish off our adventure we popped on our walking shoes and headed for the trails. There are a number of hikes to do all around the mountain, with the most kid-friendly walks being the Family Trail and the Summit Nature Walk. Both take you through the beautiful bush lands with opportunities to see native wildlife and enjoy the great outdoors.

There are plenty of events and fun things planned throughout the season. Be sure to jump on the Mt Buller website and plan your visit with an awesome activities with the family.
