kurth kiln picnic grounds, gembrook

This is a stunning spot for a forest picnic and family time. Kurth Kiln is a national park to the north of Gembrook and is a tranquil slice of paradise. The historical site was used in the 1940s, creating charcoal for use in cars after WW2. Although the kiln was not in operation for very long, it remains on the site and is an interesting read for the history buffs. in fact this is the only kiln of its kind in the country. You can walk around the old caretakers homes as well, before hitting the trails or following Tomahawk Creek for a little paddle in the water or race some leaves on the bridge.

There are a dozen different walking and horse riding trails in the area, as well as free camping zones if you are looking to stay a little while. Keep an eye out for the local birds and wildlife - you are bound to hear their beautiful calls if the kids stand still for long enough.

Mamma's special mention: While you are in the area, be sure to head and check out the Shiprock Falls as well.
