Mamma often gets asked - where is a great winery in the Yarra Valley, that I can also take the kids? Right here - Punt Road Wines! This beautiful cellar door is totally family friendly and an incredible spot to sample amazing cool-climate wines. No need to book either - swing on past and bring the whole crew - including the dog.
The property is stunning. In spring, when the grape vines and fruit trees (apples and pears - as the vineyard is also home to Napoleone Cider and Orchard Bar) and vines are completely covered in foliage, it is like you are transported into a green oasis.
At the cellar door, you can borrow a picnic basket - complete with cutlery and cutting boards - and select from local produce to feast on the picnic tables or even the lawn in the garden. If there is wind or rain in forecast, no worries, grab a table in the see-through garden Marquee for a little more comfort. The Picnic Pantry cheeses, dips, crackers, baguettes and of course, a glass of wine or even cider.
There are soft drinks, fruit and chips on the shelf too, but Mamma’s kids took the opportunity to learn about both soft and hard cheeses in our feast!
Once the food has been devoured, let the kids loose and play the yard games. The challenge of giant jenga is always fun (bags not doing the picking up and reseting part!) as well as giant noughts and crosses, some connect four and bocce.
If that’s not to the taste of your kiddos, there is a very cool tree to climb or space to kick a soccer ball if you happen to have one in the car.
