walhalla goldfields railway, walhalla

If you are heading to Walhalla, you can’t miss the Walhalla Goldfields Railway experience. This quaint little railway was completed in 1910 - just as the town of Walhalla was all but closing down its mining operations. Yet, how delightful it is that we can still ride this narrow gage railway and take in the scenery of this treacherous terrain.
There are only 3 carriages to this diesel train and you can choose to feel the wind in your hair in the open air seating, or sit with a bit more comfort (and not so scary for wrangling an 18 month old!) with the enclosed carriages. The return trip takes an hour to complete along the Stringers Creek Gorge, with a 20 minute stop over in Thomson, making it a perfect length for kids.

Mamma's special mentions: Walhalla is one of Victoria’s hidden treasures. This old gold mining town is deep in a valley but glows in the sunlight, especially during autumn. Check out what else can be found in Walhalla HERE.
