puffing billy railway lakeside visitors centre, emerald

It’s official. The train mad kids are going to LOVE you for taking them to Emerald Lake. Puffing Billy Railway have just opened their brand new visitors centre along side the beautiful original Lakeside station. This is a super slick addition to the railway’s attractions is an awesome and FREE place to visit.

Firstly the building is beautifully designed and Mamma was mesmerised by the wooden panelling - but I digress. As you walk through the space you will pass a gorgeous gift shop and then a giant indoor dining area and cafe. The space is huge and could take (I imagine) an entire train load of diners at once!

Once you have grabbed a coffee or a meal, there is a lovely display area, complete with an old engine taking centre stage. There are some relics from the years gone by as well as information panels about the history of the railway and the local area.

Once you learn all you can, you can pop out to the platform and listen out for Mr Billy himself and, if you are lucky, you will be able to wave to all the passengers as they head on to Gembrook, all while you sit back with a milkshake on the deck.

Work is still underway at the visitors centre car park, so parking is limited to the lake side of the park. You will need to walk up to toward the tracks before you can find this one - pack the pram for the toddlers.

Mamma’s special mention: Emerald Lake is another great family destination even without the trains. There are walking trails, some well loved playgrounds, paddle boats and outdoor wading pool that opens over the warm summer days.
