pound bend, warrandyte

Mamma has a mental list titled Places To Go When We Need Fresh Air and Stop Arguing at Home and high on the list is Pound Bend. This is part of the Warrandyte State Park and is a great spot for a family walk, some bird spotting and if you are lucky, a chance to see a friendly mob of kangaroos.

The trail here takes you alongside the Yarra River and we head upstream to the big open field before turning around and heading back to the car (or you can continue uphill and make it a loop. The path here fairly flat with a few boardwalks thrown in, just always check for trolls before crossing!

Once you have returned you can find a bench perfect for picnics (be aware of kookaburras who may wish to steal your lunch) or head towards the tunnel and watch the water flow past.

Back in the day, they blew a hole through the rocks and the Yarra flows through this gap, taking a shortcut back to the main stream of the river. The area is pretty user friendly with big rock walls making it a good place to set up for a snack break or to use as a base if you are brave enough to dip your toes in the water.

The area is popular in summer as the water is slightly calmer in the shallows here, but read the signage when visiting and always keep an eye on the kids around water.

the nitty gritty

public toilets - water hazards - plenty of car parking - bird life - dogs are not permitted - picnic seating
