The West might have the lions and tigers. The City might have the bears. But - Oh My! - The East might just have the best - our own native stars. Healesville Sanctuary is home to our favourite home grown heroes and a wonderful place to spend a day with the family. Out the back of town is this haven amongst the gum trees with all the characters we know and love. Emus, dingoes, wombats. Kangaroos, koalas, platypuses. Possums, eagles, bats and snakes. It is like walking into all of the best story books at once - Possum Magic, Koala Lou and Wombat Stew! The sanctuary is a great way to get up close to those creatures often too elusive to see in our backyards as well as a magnificent way to teach our children about our native wildlife. You can even book a Magic Moment Encounter for a REAL close up meeting with a spiky echidna or a slithering snake or many others. Alongside the exhibits sit a number of activities to capture the imagination for the youngsters including the Nature Play playground, the Future Vets program at the Wildlife Health Centre, the famous Where Eagles Fly - Birds of Prey show, Wallaby Wednesday for the preschoolers, and Lunar's Secret Forest. Great facilities also for all of the family with a superb parent's room and of course, a stunning cafe where you can dine while watching the echdnias waddle past .
Mamma's special mentions: Check online here for the times of the shows and plan your visit a little ahead of time to get the most our of your visit. In the warmer weather, the creek is open for some water play, so remember to pack a change of clothes. In the wetter days - look out for puddle zones!! You can also hire a super comfy Baby Jogger pram for the day if you need to as well. $20 for single ($17 for zoo members) and $35 for a double ($29.75 for zoo members)
