buchan caves, buchan

Would you believe us when we tell you that there is a place you can visit in East Gippsland where you can head underground (well … into a hillside) and through an incredible natural occurrence that has been in this land for millions of years? That is exactly what you can do at the Buchan Caves. Parks Victoria run guided tours through two of the most amazing cave systems in the area. The Royal and Fairy caves are so magical and a little mysterious - you really need to see them for yourselves.

Mamma and her crew we a little awestruck as we weaved our way down, stooping as we went (except the 5 year old - he only had to duck once or twice) to see the incredible stalactites and stalagmites in a cave, carved by an underground river from almost 400 million years ago. We ventured into the Royal Cave, which is the easier of the two caves that you can visit with the tour groups. We learned how the water that works its way through the limestone found on the land in Buchan, to create the naturally occurring shapes and patterns coming from the ceiling of the cavernous chamber.

You do need to ensure you book your tour ahead of time. The online booking process means you can’t book tours on the day, a minimum of 24hrs ahead. There is no pram access and you can’t take any backpacks either. Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to have a look at the information centre, play at the playground - and if you are super keen … there is even a pool here. Oh as well as a camp ground!
