Each time the Mamma Knows crew encounter the Polygot Theatre group we are blown away. The latest work is called Light Pickers and is currently being performed at Abbotsford Convent. This highly interactive session is an incorporation of sound and light. Guided by three silent facilitators, the room is dark, all except the glowing ropes, shapes and creatures that begin in the middle of the room. Once the children and their adults get into the groove, the objects are moved throughout the space and new discoveries are made. Even the floor lights up when they step in just the right spot.
The little ones are drawn to the glowing, and at times, humming and musical objects. The performers - who are glowing as well - roam and engage with the children, passing things around or helping play a musical sea shell. The sounds in the room are pretty mystical and you get a feeling you are in the deepest depths of the sea. Watch out for an octopus swimming around!
The June sessions are the first season of this performance installation and have been super popular. All mid week allocated time slots are booked out, but there will be rolling drop in sessions on Saturday June 29 where no bookings are required. If you can’t make this weekend, keep an eye out for future seasons. It is truly magical. Best suited for the teeny tiny ones - 0 to 5 years.
Mamma's special mention: Abbotsford Convent is a wonderful place to explore with the family. With markets happening regularly, as well as Collingwood Children's Farm next door it is easy to make a whole day of fun.
*Please note - there are some roadworks in the area. Look for detour signs if you are heading in by car.
