This has to be one of Mamma's favourite style of music class. One where there is a limited soundtrack, the adults are wholeheartedly involved and the children have an absolute ball (figuratively and literally)! The Rhythm Tree is a music program that is based on community. Where people come together and celebrate music with their children, supporting them to learn through song and play. The kids are invited to join in but are not made to do anything they don't wish to - although with so much excitement and fun - it is hard not to jump on in and play.
Classes here at Doncaster are facilitated by Gillian - an amazing music educator that brings the joy to the room from the moment the doors are opened. Knowing all the parents and children by name, she oozes enthusiasm and ensures all are included, just like a big family. Sessions can include chanting songs, call and echo, action songs, plenty of dancing and singing. And a music class can not be complete without the egg shakers and balls for beating like a drum. Each week different ways of making music are explored from the large gathering drums, dancing scarves, rhythm sticks, bells, parachutes, large stretchy rings, Bilibo shells and resonator bells. The mix of ages in the group makes for a wonderful learning experience in sharing, packing up and playing together as well.
Mamma's special mention: Gillian offers free trials via the Rhythm Tree website. It is a great way to get a taste of the program for yourself. There more classes held at CERES in Brunswick, at the Abbotsford Convent, Newport and at Bubup Womindjeka in Port Melbourne.
