playgroup in focus - kolo ukrainian playgroup, box hill south

There are thousands of families all across Victoria that speak multiple languages in their home. Culture and traditions being passed on from one generation to the next. Often, however, when these cultural pockets are small, we have to gather the tribe together in the form of a bilingual playgroup - giving children and their grown ups a chance to play, learn and develop their multilingual skills with other children of a similar age.

The Kolo Ukrainian Playgroup provides that exact type of community education and connects families that live all over Melbourne together in the one space. The sessions are facilitated and are communicated mostly in Ukrainian and children enjoy singing, dancing and most importantly have fun immersed in the Ukrainian language. The group is a mix of fluency with some parents having limited English and others with limited Ukrainian. Regardless, all are included and supported with learning new skills and the little sponges that we call children, pick up things so quickly. Although we didn't understand all that was said, Mamma and Bubs did know a few songs and learnt some new words along the way. Fun is fun in every language.

Mamma's special mentions: Kolo playgroup is held at Box Hill South Neighbourhood House, which is located right next to Artists Park - a great neighbourhood playground celebrating a little of the Whitehorse history.
