national sports museum @ mcg, east melbourne

The MCG is right in the heart of so many Melbournians. It could be that you spent every weekend here cheering your favourite footy team, or you watched the Commonwealth Games here back in 2006 OR caught your very first concert - the Michael Jackson History tour! Well, these might just be Mamma's memories, but regardless, the 'G is a huge part of Melbourne culture.

The National Sports Museum is located right in the underbelly of this magnificent stadium. It showcases all that is wonderful about the Aussie sporting tradition and has so many relics and memorabilia on display. If you want to teach the kids some history about cricket, football, netball or the Olympics, this is the best place to do it. There is even a touch and feel table where you can hold the Sydney torch or try on Ian Thorpe's shoes!

The spot, however, where the kids will wanna hang out, is the fully interactive and hands on section - Game On. Here you can test your skills in all sorts of sports: your handball skills, shoot a goal in netball or soccer, have a go at archery or simply test your reflexes! This zone suits your primary aged kids and ones with a competitive streak.

Mamma's special mention: School holidays is a great time to visit. Click here to see what is happening or scroll down below for all the ins and out!

Go behind the scenes with footy stars in My Match Day Kids will have the opportunity to step into the shoes of a football champ as they experience the real-life match day experience of a player at the ‘G.  AFL and AFLW players will be on hand to share their stories and offer insights into the routines and activities that take place before during and after a game – from the player change rooms during warm up to the tense times spent on the interchange bench.

Mon, July 2, 1.30pm: Levi Casboult (Carlton) and Sam Frost (Melbourne)
Tues, July 3, 1.30pm: Callum Moore (Richmond) and Chloe Molloy (Collingwood)
Wed, July 4, 1.30pm: Jack Crisp and Brody Mihocek (Collingwood)
Fri, July 6, 10.30am & 12pm: Paul Ahern, Will Waker and Kaitlyn Ashmore (North Melbourne)

Play and explore in the interactive Experience Lab (now until end of school holidays) Sport and digital technology collide in the Experience Lab, an exciting new interactive gallery at the NSM.  Visitors are encouraged to play with, react to and give feedback on high-tech new installations. From refining aim with an archery interactive, to challenging concentration with an eye-tracking game of foosball, the Experience Lab will change the way kids see and interact with sport.
